I am studying mathematical physics in my PhD! Specifically, I study quantum condensed matter systems, and I make statements from physics mathematically rigorous! The math I use does not neatly fall into the dichotomy between analysis and algebra—the primary tool in making the physical statements mathematically rigorous is operator algebras, which is a type of functional analysis. But the physical statements involve category theory, which is very algebraic!
