Swarthmore College Wind Ensemble

The Swarthmore College Wind Ensemble

The Swarthmore Wind Ensemble rehearses once a week for two-and-a-half hours in Lang Concert Hall, and performs a full concert at the end of each semester.  We are a Tri-College group, welcoming students from Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges who are interested in exploring the Concert Band repertoire in a collegiate setting.  We perform a wide range of repertoire, from band classics to the newest compositions, and our programs often include arrangements of music from musicals and films as well. (Please read our full repertoire vision statement here.) The Wind Ensemble has taken field trips to hear world-renowned bands (such as the President's Own Marine Band), and sometimes rehearses outdoors in the Scott Amphitheater.  Any member of the Tri-Co community who plays a band instrument is welcome to join. The Wind Ensemble is directed by Andrew Hauze '04.

Wind Ensemble Auditions, Fall 2024

We welcome new members for the Fall Semester of Wind Ensemble! Auditions are only to determine seating assignments: any student who plays a band instrument (woodwind, brass, or percussion) is welcome to participate. This semester we'll be playing works by George Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue), Katajh Copley (Bridges), Florence Price (Adoration), Gustav Holst (Second Suite in F), and Lalo Schifrin (the theme from Mission Impossible).

To audition, please prepare any 3-4 minute excerpt from your repertoire. Play anything that you feel comfortable playing and that will give me a sense of your current level. Auditions are very low-key and friendly, so while it's very natural to be nervous about auditions, please know that we try to make auditions a very welcoming space.

Auditions will be held in-person in Lang Music Building on Wednesday, September 4. Please sign up here once you know your class schedule. If you're not available during those times, please just email me at ahauze1@swarthmore.edu to find a different time.

If you are not yet sure if you'd like to join Wind Ensemble, please attend our first rehearsal on Thursday, September 5 at 7:00 pm in Lang Concert Hall to learn more about it.

Wind Ensemble can be taken for 0.5 credit or 0 credit. We rehearse on Thursday nights in Lang Concert Hall from 7:00-9:30 pm. Please email ahauze1@swarthmore.edu with any questions.
