Chinese Music Ensemble
The Chinese Music Ensemble, co-directed by Guowei Wang and Lei X. Ouyang, performs traditional and contemporary music from different regions of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese Diaspora. Students perform on traditional Chinese instruments including the guzheng (zither), erhu (bowed fiddle), pipa (plucked lute), yangqin (hammered dulcimer), dizi (flute), and percussion. The ensemble has no prerequisites and is open to students with or without prior Chinese musical experience. Students with no prior musical experience (of any tradition) are welcome to attend our first rehearsal and discuss your interests with the directors. Weekly rehearsals are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and students are expected to practice independently or in smaller groups (“sectionals”) for an additional 1 hour per week.
