Critical Mass
Medieval-Renaissance Vocal Chamber Ensemble

Our newest ensemble, Critical Mass, is a mixed-voice, smaller scale (“chamber”) ensemble of select singers. Our music making focuses on 500 years of choral music from the twelfth to seventeenth centuries (think chant to Monteverdi). Our process is highly collaborative and members will sing their voice part with 1 or 2 other singers.
Critical Mass meets Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 in Presser and on Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 in the Concert Hall. Our performance repertoire for 2024-25 features the work of Hildegard of Bingen, William Byrd, Claudio Monteverdi, Tomàs Luis de Victoria, and Salamone Rossi.
Auditions take place during the first week of classes, and can be scheduled here. Auditions will consist of a) brief listening exercise, b) a pre-assigned segment of music to sing, and c) an excerpt of your choice.
