Critical Mass

Medieval-Renaissance Vocal Chamber Ensemble

Photo of Critical Mass vocal chamber ensemble performance

Our newest ensemble, Critical Mass, is a mixed-voice, smaller scale (“chamber”) ensemble of select singers. Our music making focuses on 500 years of choral music from the twelfth to seventeenth centuries (think chant to Monteverdi). Our process is highly collaborative and members will sing their voice part with 1 or 2 other singers.

Critical Mass will meet on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 in Presser and on Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 in the Concert Hall.  Rehearsals will begin Tuesday, September 10, 2024. Our performance repertoire for 2024-25 will feature the work of Hildegard of Bingen, William Byrd, Claudio Monteverdi, Tomàs Luis de Victoria, and Salamone Rossi.

Auditions will take place during the first week of classes, and can be scheduled here.  Auditions will consist of a a) brief listening exercise, b) a pre-assigned segment of music to sing, and c) an excerpt of your choice (literally ANYTHING is fine!).
