Lab Orchestra
The Lab Orchestra is a student chamber orchestra led by advanced conducting students. Student conductors rehearse the group once a week, coached by Andrew Hauze. The Lab Orchestra is a part of the Fetter Chamber Music Program, and performs each semester on one of the Fetter Chamber Music Concerts. The Lab Orchestra has also performed at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and works regularly with our Featured Artists, including coachings and performances with the Jasper String Quartet and violinist David Kim.
Students may become eligible to conduct the Lab Orchestra after having taken Music 18 (Conducting and Orchestration) and with permission of Prof. Hauze, with whom eligible students continue to study conducting independently. Previous student conductors of the Lab Orchestra who have gone on to careers in conducting include Andrew J. Kim '18, music director of the New York Youth Symphony, and Shira Samuels-Shragg '20, assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony. Students interested in studying conducting at Swarthmore are encouraged to contact Prof. Hauze.
