Interested in Working for the Math & Stats Department?

Would you like to be a math/stat clinician, pirate, grader, or tutor?

Our department hires Swarthmore students to fill positions of Pirate, Clinician, and Grader.  Tutors are coordinated by the math/stat department but hired by the Office of Academic Success.

Math & Stats Positions

Pirate

During the fall semester, Pirates support Math 015 and 025.  During the spring semester, Pirates support Math 025 and 027.  Pirates attend classes and also lead study sessions in the evening.  Pirates typically work 6 hours a week.  To work as a Math Pirate, you need to have a good knowledge of Calculus I (to be a Math 015 Pirate), Calculus I and II (to be a Math 025 Pirate), or  Linear Algebra (to be a Math 027 Pirate).   First-time Pirates must participate in the STEM Pedagogy training, bringing the total time commitment to 7 hours per week.

Course-specific clinician

To work as a Linear Algebra clinician (fall only), you need good knowledge of Math 027 and 028, along with strong proof-writing skills.

To work as a Multivariable Calculus clinician, you need good knowledge of at least Math 034, with Math 035 preferred. The Multivariable Calculus Clinic supports students in Math 033 and 034 during the fall and Math 034 and 035 during the spring.

To work as a Differential Equations Clinician, you need good knowledge of Math 044 and support students in both Math 043 and 044.

Clinicians typically work 3 hours a week on one particular evening. Clinicians facilitate or co-facilitate evening study sessions where students collaborate on assignments and ask questions about one particular course. Clinicians do not attend the class, so they must have a strong understanding of the course material without any additional review. First-time Clinicians must participate in the STEM Pedagogy training.

Math Clinician

To work in the Math Clinic, you need to have a good knowledge of a variety of math courses, including calculus (single and multivariable) as well as linear algebra, and some upper-level mathematics courses.  For the Fall semester, Math clinicians must have already taken Math 063 (Real Analysis) and be prepared to support students in that course.  For the spring semester, Math clinicians should have already taken Math 067 (Modern Algebra) and preferably Math 044 (Differential Equations).  Math clinicians typically work 3 hours per week.  First-time Clinicians must participate in the STEM Pedagogy training.

Stat Clinician

To work in the Stat Clinic, you should be comfortable explaining Statistics concepts, have enough knowledge of R to help students troubleshoot on assignments, and have experience facilitating group collaboration. Stat clinicians should have done well in at least Stat 011 and 021 , and some clinicians will also support an upper-level statistics course (Stat 061 in the fall or Stat 051 and 111 in the spring).  Stat Clinicians typically work 3 hours per week. First-time Clinicians must participate in the STEM Pedagogy training.

one-on-one Clinician

One-on-one clinicians support students in a variety of Math or Stat courses.  Strong knowledge in a variety of math or stat courses is required.  Students make individual 30-minute appointments for support with a specific course.  One-on-one clinicians may support students with proof writing, completing problem sets, or reviewing course material.  Typically students with previous experience as a pirate or clinician are hired for this role.

Stat/Math grader

To work as a Grader, you should have taken the course (or a very similar course) that you will grade.  In addition, you need to be able to work well independently and meet deadlines promptly without any reminders. Graders typically work 3-4 hours a week and can schedule their time flexibly as long as they meet the agreed upon deadlines. Graders are expected to remain anonymous and not communicate directly with students in the class about their grading.

Stat/Math Tutor

To work as a Tutor, you should have taken and done well in the course (or a very similar course) you will tutor.  The tutor may not concurrently be a grader for the same course, but pirates and clinicians are eligible to work additional hours as tutors.  Tutors are typically not hired at the beginning of the semester but as tutor requests are made throughout the semester. Each tutoring assignment is a maximum of 10 hours per semester that can be flexibly scheduled. Read more about tutors.
