Prof. Tom Stephenson Recognized with ACS Luminary Award
January 1st, 2011
Tom Stephenson accepted a ChemLuminary Award on behalf of the Division of Physical Chemistry which developed a physical chemistry symposium for undergraduate researchers. Tom was instrumental in the initiation and organization of this program. The program was one of three nationally recognized with ChemLuminary Awards for innovative programs and outstanding service to their members. The program that Tom helped design allows up to 25 outstanding undergraduate chemistry students to be selected for a series of undergraduate-focused talks and social events during the national American Chemical Society meeting each year. The Division of Physical Chemistry then organizes a series of introductory talks for the undergraduates by symposia organizers or speakers to provide background content and additional context on the symposium topics. The Division also schedules a dinner with selected speakers so that students and faculty can discuss science and graduate education issues informally. Finally, student participants are invited to present their research results as part of the Division of Physical Chemistry poster session.Swarthmore's own Laura Wang '10, was able to take advantage of this novel physical chemistry program in 2010.
