Karín Aguilar-San Juan ’84
Karín Aguilar-San Juan ’84 was named to the board of Volunteers of America–Minnesota (VOA–MN), anonprofit health and human services organization. Formerly a board member of Amicus (which has since merged with VOA–MN), Aguilar-San Juan has extensive experience supporting those in prison, leaving prison, and youth in the justice system. Aguilar-San Juan is an associate professor of American studies at Macalester College who received a Ph.D. in sociology from Brown University. She became active in Amicus after learning that students in her schools and prison seminar had interned there. For the last eight years, she has taught a school-to-prison pipeline class, exploring the theory that the education system’s responses to cultural conflicts and discipline issues push poor and minority children out of schools and into the justice system.
