Laura Wang ’10
Laura Wang ’10 was one of 35 future teachers from around the country to receive a prestigious Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) fellowship. The five-year fellowship provides recipients with $175,000 to cover the costs of certification and extended training and support mounted by the foundation. Another goal of the foundation is to build a dedicated base of science and mathematics teachers.
Wang will begin a master’s program this fall at Teachers College at Columbia University focusing on secondary chemistry education. She hopes to be in a classroom full time by the 2013–14 school year.
The fellowship serves to aid fledgling math, biology, and physical science teachers at the start of their careers to ensure that high-caliber teachers remain in the profession. According to the KSTF, although nearly half of all new teachers nationwide leave the profession within the first five years, KSTF teachers have a retention rate of 95 percent.
