Monica Eileen Patterson ’97 was named a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Ethnographic
Research and Exhibition in the Aftermath of Violence at Concordia University in Montreal. She earned a Ph.D. in anthropology and history from the University of Michigan, and her current book project examines the constructions of childhood in late-apartheid South Africa.
The prestigious fellowship, which includes a stipend of $70,000 per year for up to two years, works to develop world-class researchers at an internationally competitive level of funding. During her tenure, Patterson will create an interactive curatorial project around children’s drawings from the late-apartheid period based on her extensive archival and field research in South Africa.
She holds a certificate in museum studies from the University of Michigan and has curated several exhibits related to her research. She was a Fulbright scholar with the International Institute of Education in South Africa and has returned to Swarthmore as an admissions interviewer and an honors examiner for Professor Timothy Burke’s seminar in African history.
