The Health Sciences Office provides programming, resources, and personalized guidance to students and alumni who are considering a career in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or other health professions. A dedicated health science advisor, Gigi Simeone, advises students about course selection during their time at Swarthmore, prepares recommendations for students who are applying to professional schools, and helps them navigate the application process.
“Medical school applications can be stressful and confusing at times, so I’ve always appreciated how easy it is to schedule a meeting with Gigi to talk about anything, from occasional check-ins to final edits on essays,” says Sajal Medha Akkipeddi ’20. “She has an extraordinary amount of knowledge about the process, and is very friendly and easy to talk to.”
During the last five years, 84 percent of Swarthmore applicants were admitted to medical school, compared to a national average of 42 percent.
In 2018, Swarthmore announced an early acceptance program with Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College for Swarthmore students who are interested in becoming physicians with expertise in health policy, population health, and community engagement.
