Student stipends, grants, or fellowships are awarded at a rate determined by the College for one summer (10 weeks) of summer research. FICA and indirect costs are not charged on summer stipends. By contrast, student salary is what students are paid in hourly wages to do non-academic work at any time of the year. FICA and indirect costs are charged on this. FICA is 7.65% and should be charged on all wages and salaries, including hourly wages earned by students.
Fringe benefits are calculated on the salary of a postdoc or other full-time employee hired under the grant.
