The summer after her freshman year, Maya was a research intern in the Epidemiology-Biostatistics center of Memorial Sloan-Kettering, a cancer center in New York City. She helped with data entry for several cancer research projects and assisted with the analysis of a new quantitative measure for early breast cancer detection with Dr. Jonine Bernstein.
This past summer, she volunteered with Israel's Magen David Adom as an EMT. She was trained in emergency medicine and used her skills to help the sick and wounded as a first responder on an ambulance in Bat Yam, a suburb of Tel Aviv.
At Swarthmore, Maya is involved in TOPSoccer, a program for mentally and physically challenged youth. She is in the international a capella group, Chaverim and is event coordinator for QSA. She is planning a large-scale benefit fashion auction to take place in the fall to raise money for a national charity. Maya write poetry and short stories and has a passion for music. She plays guitar and piano, mixing her love of language and music to write songs. She also has a not-so-secret passion for all things fashion and make-up.
