Annyika (Nyika) Corbett
Hometown: Broadbent, Ore.
High School: Myrtle Point High School
Major: Economics, minor in public policy
Possible Career: "Something exciting"
Nyika grew up on a farm on the south coast of Oregon and attended a very small rural high school. Concerned with the limitations of her school's curriculum and the quality of education, she enrolled in classes at the nearest community college (40 miles away) and supplemented this with a correspondence course in physics. In addition to working on her family farm, Nyika has spent time volunteering with a local Women's Safety and Resource Center as well as the local County Courthouse and various after-school programs.
Nyika served as Senior Class President and took the lead in trying to improve the program in her school, finding a teacher to serve as sponsor in order to establish a chapter of The National Honor Society and a tutoring program for the students. Throughout high school Nyika also ran cross-country and track and played basketball.
Nyika spent the summer of 2007 in Tanzania, working as an intern for Global Students Leadership, a program which provides training programs and networking for women in under-developed countries to give them the skills and support they need to become future leaders. She spent the remainder of the summer volunteering at an orphanage in Dar es Salaam and an elementary school.
Nyika has been selected as a Resident Assistant (RA) at Swarthmore for both her junior and senior years. She also runs Track and Cross Country.
This past summer she returned home to help on her family farm.
