Amelia is passionate about Urban Education. She volunteered for Breakthrough Collaborative, a nonprofit that increases educational opportunity for high-potential, low-income middle school students for three years, including the summer of 2010 when she worked 60 hours a week teaching 8th grade students literacy and Spanish in Breakthough's summer school program. She also founded a K-8 tutoring program for immigrant middle schoolers, was the tutoring chair of her school's National Honor Society, and was a student representative on her school's Collaborative School accountability committee. She was the Centerfold editor of her high school paper for two years and a staff writer for four, and wrote a monthly column for a school newsletter. In addition, Amelia ran cross country for three years, was the captain of her JV soccer team, and was named an All-State Rugby Player in 2010. Amelia hopes to get certified to teach biology and English literature in the state of Pennsylvania while at Swarthmore.
