Swarthmore Black Alumni Network
Founded by alumni of Swarthmore College, the mission of the Swarthmore Black Alumni Network (SBAN) is to serve, involve, engage, and inform the Swarthmore community of Black alumni to build powerful networks, promote mentoring, create initiatives, and execute programs that connect Black alumni to each other, their communities, current Black students, and to the faculty, staff, and administration of Swarthmore College.
SBAN intends to create a strong and supportive association of Black Swarthmore alumni in perpetuity to address pertinent issues and to enhance the alumni experience of each graduating class. We welcome any student, alum, family members, or community friends to join us on campus for our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. day of service, Black History Month events, or during Garnet or Alumni Weekends, as well as at regional events around the country.
Want to be more involved? Say hello, connect with students, or host an alumni event in a city near you, contact Dee Butler-Simms at dbutler1@swarthmore.edu.
Who we are
SBAN primarily focuses on our 1,304 Black alumni, but welcomes faculty, staff, parents, and students to the community. Friends of all ethnicities are also encouraged to attend our signature on-campus events and gatherings.
SBAN is governed by a volunteer-based Executive Committee comprised of two co-chairs, an executive secretary, media and communications coordinator, fundraising and stewardship coordinator, regional connections coordinators, young alumni advisors, and emeritus founding members who serve as mentors and elders. SBAN also benefits from the advisement of the two student presidents of Swarthmore African-American Student Society (SASS) and Students Of Caribbean Ancestry (SOCA) who serve as student liaisons.
