Nestled on the edge of the Crum Woods, Lang Music Building -- home to the Music Department -- contains faculty offices, classrooms, practice rooms, a reception area, the Daniel Underhill Music and Dance Library, and a stunningly beautiful and acoustically superb 450-seat concert hall. Completed in 1973, this award-winning building of 36,500 square feet was designed by architect Romaldo Giurgola, a leading member of the Philadelphia School, a group of architects associated with the distinguished mid-century modernist, Louis Kahn. The building takes full advantage of the beautiful wooded landscape and steep slope surrounding the building by incorporating many floor-to-ceiling windows, including the 20 ft. high glass wall of the concert hall stage. Natural light illuminates and defines the interior spaces of the building in a manner that is both serene and functional. These inviting spaces bring together the Swarthmore arts community in collaboration and celebration of music and dance.
Practice Rooms, all of which have a Steinway or Yamaha piano, are available on a first-come/first-served basis (OneCard activation is needed). Instrument lockers are nearby and are provided free of charge.
