For Students

Cancelling an On-Campus or Tri-Co Recruiting Interview

Students are required to attend all on-campus or Tri-Co interviews they have accepted and/or scheduled. Should you need to cancel your interview, please complete the following.

1. Log into Handshake and see if you're able to cancel. If Handshake does not allow you cancel, then the schedule has closed and is considered a "last minute" cancellation.

2. If the schedule has closed on Handshake,  you must email Kelly Doughterty as soon as possible. Canceling within 24 hours of the interview day or failing to show up will result in temporary deactivation of their Handshake account. A missed interview requires students to write an apology letter to the organization. A copy must be given to Career Services (via email or hard copy) in order to reactivate the Handshake account. If students misses more than one unexcused interview, all on-campus recruiting privileges will be lost.

Cancelling an On-Campus or Tri-Co Recruiting Interview Due to Illness

If your interview is in-person, but you feel well enough to conduct the interview virtually, please email Kelly Doughtery to make the switch.

Should you get sick and you don't feel well enough to conduct your interview (virtually or in-person), you are more than welcome to cancel or re-schedule your interview.

Accepting an Offer

Please consider carefully before accepting an offer of employment/internship. Career Services realizes this can often be a challenging process when there are potentially multiple offers. We can help students manage this process and pro-actively self-advocate while protecting their professional reputations. When anticipating an offer, it is best to schedule an appointment with a career counselor to discuss decision making and negotiation strategies.

Both employers and Career Services considers accepting a job/internship offer by voice, email, or letter is making a binding agreement between the employer and applicant.

Once an applicant accepts an offer, they are expected to stop their search and are no longer eligible to apply to positions in Handshake or participate in on-campus recruiting. It is unethical and unprofessional to continue searching.

Once an individual has accepted an offer, they should notify all other organizations where their application is pending and cancel any remaining interviews scheduled.

Withdrawing or Reneging on an Offer

We can help students manage this process and pro-actively self-advocate while protecting their professional reputations. Anyone who withdraws an acceptance (i.e. reneging on an offer) after initially accepting will immediately lose all recruiting privileges. This action reflects poorly on the individual, Career Services, and the College, often causing that employer to discontinue recruiting at the College.

Swarthmore College Career Services follows the Principles for Professional Conduct established by The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and requires students, alumni and employers to practice the same principles to ensure equitable recruiting.
