Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot ’66, a sociologist and the Emily Hargroves Fisher Professor of Education at Harvard, was recently elected to the American Philosophical Society, the oldest learned society in the United States. The Society provides “opportunities for multidisciplinary, intellectual fellowship.” Lawrence-Lightfoot, a member of the Board of Managers from 1981 to 1988, was honored by Swarthmore College in 1992 with an endowed professorship in her name. She was also the recipient of a MacArthur Prize Fellowship in 1984 and Harvard’s George Ledlie Prize in 1993. When she retires, she will be the first African American woman in Harvard’s history to have an endowed chair named in her honor. Lawrence-Lightfoot has written nine award-winning books, including Balm in Gilead: Journey of a Healer, a biography of her mother, Margaret Morgan Lawrence M.D., recipient of a 2003 honorary doctorate of science from the College.

Ms. Lawrence-Lightfoot. I've just given away 30 copies of The Third Chapter to friends who are about to turn 50. My only regret is that I wasn't privileged to read this book when I was 49. I didn't get to it until I was 74.
Actually I'm at the end of the third chapter and would love to see you write about the fourth chapter (which I'm going to begin on January 3, 2011). To finish out my 75th year I've just published the Placer County real food cookbook. Check out http://www.placercountyrealfood.com. Next week we're turning in the 2nd edition printing of the book. Now I'm wondering if I'm totally goofy to start in on writing yet another book? Wish I had your 4th chapter wisdom to read!!! Don't make me wait too long.
