Ernest Smith ’44 recently received the 2008 Special Recognition Award from the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Radio Science for his service to the organization and his contributions to the development of the Henry Booker Gold Medal and the Booker Fellow Award for Young Radio Scientists. Since graduating from Swarthmore, Smith’s specialty has been radio wave propagation, particularly sporadic E. His primary career was at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS, now NIST), where he mixed research and administration; later, he worked for the NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has been an adjunct professor of electrical engineering at the University of Colorado since 1978. Smith is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and appears in the NIST Gallery of Distinguished Scientists, Engineers, and Administrators in Gaithersburg, Md.
