Lauren Belfer ’75 has been recognized for a second time for her literary work with the inclusion of her latest novel, A Fierce Radiance, on The Washington Post Best Fiction List for 2010. A Fierce Radiance was also named an NPR Mystery of the Year. The novel is at once a thriller set in the early days of penicillin, a love story, a family saga, and a window into American history. It portrays the tumultuous early days of World War II, when many feared that America would lose the war, even children were caught up in the sacrifices demanded by the nation’s mobilization, and individuals clung fiercely to their loved ones because no one could predict what tomorrow would bring. Belfer’s debut novel, City of Light, (1999) was a New York Times bestseller as well as a number one Book Sense pick, a Barnes & Noble Discover Award nominee, a New York Times Notable Book, a Library Journal Best Book, and a main selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club. Her fiction has also been published in Michigan Quarterly Review, Shenandoah, and Henfield Prize Stories. Her nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, The Christian Science Monitor, and elsewhere.
