Charlotte Phillips ’63 has received the Sidel-Levy Award for Peace, which honors a member of the American Public Health Association for outstanding contributions to preventing war and promoting international peace. In 1984, Phillips co-founded Brooklyn For Peace, an organization committed to promoting peace and eliminating the social injustices brought about by war and militarization. The organization, which began as a group of parents with children at the same daycare center, has grown into a multi-issue network addressing war as a public health issue. Following the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy, Phillips and Brooklyn for Peace developed the “Voices from Brooklyn” campaign, which advocated a non-military response to the attacks and the protection of members of local Arab and Muslim communities from detention and deportation. Today, Brooklyn for Peace develops educational programs focusing on war-torn areas of the world and the issue of nuclear disarmament and encourages the resolution of international conflict through institutions such as the United Nations. Phillips is a primary-care pediatrician in the New York City public hospital system, attending physician of pediatrics at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center and the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, and an instructor for the SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn.
