Eric Song joined the faculty in 2009. A specialist in early modern English literature, he teaches courses on Shakespeare, Milton, and the history of Narcissus and narcissism. He is the author of Love against Substitution: Seventeenth-Century Literature and the Meaning of Marriage, which was published in 2022 by Stanford University Press as part of its Cultural Memory in the Present series. His first book, Dominion Undeserved: Milton and the Perils of Creation, was published by Cornell University Press in 2013. He has also published scholarly articles in ELH: English Literary HistoryELR: English Literary Renaissance, Huntington Library Quarterly, Milton StudiesMilton Quarterly, Modern Philology, and Spenser Studies. He is starting work on a new book project, tentatively titled Necessary Evil: Bitumen, Early Modernity, and the Circulation of Historical Knowledge.
