Update on Provost’s Office Leadership
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff Members,
As you know, Provost and Dean of the Faculty Tomoko Sakomura has been on medical leave since the start of the academic year. She and I spoke recently, and we concluded that she will not return to her administrative position. Fortunately, I expect her to return to her faculty position as professor of art history when she is able to do so.
I will launch a search for our next provost before spring break and will consult with the Committee on Faculty Procedures to finalize the search committee and process. My goal is to have our next provost in place by July 1.
In the meantime, Kathleen Howard, the Edward Hicks Magill Professor of Mathematics & Natural Sciences and professor of chemistry & biochemistry, will continue serving as acting provost and dean of the faculty. My deep gratitude to Kathleen and the entire Provost’s Office for their tireless efforts to help us manage this extended transition period. We are all grateful for their continued care and attention in this time of uncertainty.
I also want to thank Tomoko for her service to the College. Those of us who have had the privilege of working with her know her as a talented and compassionate teacher, scholar, colleague, mentor, and leader. I know we all look forward to welcoming her back to campus.
Sincerely,
Val Smith
President
