Department of Education Title VI Investigation

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff Members,

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to share with you that the U.S. Department of Education’s (DOE) Office of Civil Rights (OCR) has informed us that it is opening a Title VI investigation into the College based on complaints of discrimination on the basis of national origin (shared Jewish ancestry). The OCR has more than 100 similar open investigations at colleges and universities across the country.

We have not yet received the complaint, and therefore do not know the specific allegations made against the College. We are committed to complying with the law and the important anti-discrimination protections it affords. We will, of course, cooperate with the DOE as it conducts its review.

On numerous occasions, President Smith has underscored Swarthmore’s belief in free expression and the vital role that engaging with and understanding diverse views plays in Swarthmore’s educational experience. We have also — through words and actions — reaffirmed our commitment to cultivating an environment free of intimidation, harassment, and discrimination, and upholding College policies designed to support that commitment. Let us say once more: We condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Arab hate, and all forms of discrimination within our community.

As we work together to build a better Swarthmore, we encourage all community members to embrace a spirit of compassion, empathy, and mutual respect to ensure that Swarthmore remains a place of learning, growth, and belonging for everyone.

Sincerely,

Tomoko Sakomura
