Office of Research Integrity and Engagement

Department Overview

The Office of Research Integrity and Engagement (ORIE) partners with the Swarthmore research community to support ethical research involving human participants, vertebrate animals and biohazards, and is guided by governing federal, state, local and institutional policies and regulations.   We offer guidance relating to research integrity programs, ethical community engagement and compliance responsibilities, and facilitate the review processes related to conflicts of interest, data management, export controls,  responsible and ethical conduct of research, research misconduct concerns and various research-related agreements.

The ORIE provides support to the research community by way of educational offerings and consultation, and administrative support to the committees that approve research and the Institutional Official with the responsibility for integrity of research at Swarthmore.  Each committee includes members of the faculty and community members as mandated by federal regulations.

The College's commitment to research integrity and ethical engagement align with our mission to foster collaborative, innovative research and creative production with a commitment to peace, equity and social responsibility, and a ongoing desire to create opportunities for education and growth among our students, faculty and staff through active engagement with rich cultural diversity both locally and at the international level.

Reporting to the Provost, the Director of the Office of Research Integrity and Engagement, oversees of the Research Integrity Program and serves as the Research Integrity Officer (RIO) for Swarthmore College.
