The opening scene of the play, when the Suppliants, a group of 50 sisters, arrive on the shores of the Greek city Argos. They have fled forced marriage in Egypt and are seeking refuge.
A scene in which the Suppliants engage in prayer to Zeus.
After pleading with the King of Argos for safe passage, he grants the Suppliants entry into the city. Their joy turns into a large, ecstatic dance, featured here.
In this scene, the Sons of Aegyptos, the men to whom the Suppliants are betrothed, arrive in Argos to "reclaim" their wives. [Content Warning: brief reference to physical and sexual violence.]
