Message from President Valerie Smith

President Valerie Smith sent the following message to the community on November 15, 2016:

Dear Swarthmore students, faculty and staff,

I write to you today to affirm that the College is committed to nurturing and maintaining an environment where all members of our community can fully flourish and participate without fear of physical and verbal intimidation. In light of the hateful and sometimes violent acts of prejudice that have occurred in the Philadelphia region and around the country during the past week, I want you to know that I am committed to the safety and security of every member of our community.

Our Quaker heritage has grounded us in nonviolent inquiry and action -- where all voices are free to be heard. As violent acts arise around our country and region, we must do all we can to keep one another safe and secure, and we must promote our values of inclusion and equality. Our true north has always been compassionate engagement with one another and a determination to confront the deep challenges we face as a society. In the face of prejudice and hatred, we must amplify the celebration of our diversity and uphold our commitment to it, and to one another. Please know that we are exploring institutional responses that align with these values. 

Your safety is our highest priority. Please report any suspicious or unlawful activity and contact public safety at 610-328-8333.
