This fall, Julian and Virginia Cornell Visiting Professor Beppie Van Den Bogaerde discussed "Sign Language of the Netherlands: A Dutch Treat?" In her talk, she presents research on bridging two different cultures - sign language in deaf and hard of hearing children as a first language and in hearing adult learners as a second language. Van Den Bogaerde has over 30 years of advocacy for the Dutch deaf community. At Swarthmore, she is teaching a linguistics course on sign language as a foreign language this fall and another course on bimodal bilingualism in the spring.
