Men's Basketball Tops National Preseason Poll

Zac O'Dell goes for layup

All-American Zac O'Dell '20 is one of four returning starters from last year's national runner-up squad.

For the first time in program history, the Swarthmore College men's basketball team is ranked number one in NCAA Division III. Swarthmore, after reaching the NCAA championship game in 2018-19, enters the year atop the D3hoops.com preseason poll released on Tuesday.

Swarthmore returns four members from last year's starting lineup: All-American Zac O'Dell '20, All-Conference players Conor Harkins '21 and Nate Shafer '20, as well as George Visconti '22, who had an impressive rookie campaign.

Men's basketball is the third Swarthmore program to reach the top spot in the national rankings, joining the men's tennis team (in 1977, 1981, 1985, and 1990) and the men's soccer team (2010).

Swarthmore opens its season on the road with a Nov. 9 matchup at Eastern University.
