Ineke Sluiter: Tough Words, Soft Hearts
In fall 2014, classicist Ineke Sluiter presented the annual Martin Ostwald Lecture. In her talk, she uses theories of conflict resolution to examine ancient and modern debates on the right course of action and how they invoke arguments and rhetorical strategies derived from morality and self-interest. Examples include Thucydides and the modern debate about the financial crisis in Greece.
Sluiter is a professor of humanities at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society in the Netherlands.
