Understanding Your Fall Bill

“Pending” and “Authorized” items on the bill

“Pending Items” are noted but not subtracted because they have not been formally processed. You may subtract these items from the amount due and pay the remainder. Items that might be pending include:

  • State Grant Funds: These funds must be received by the College before they can be credited to your account. If your state grant has not yet credited for the fall semester, please contact your state agency and inquire about your status. Once your state notifies us of your status via a formal roster, usually after add/drop, we will credit this amount to your fall bill.
  • Federal Pell, SEOG grants: These funds will be pending if additional information is needed from your family by the Financial Aid Office. Email finaid@swarthmore.edu with questions.
  • Direct Loan funds: These funds will be pending if additional information is needed from your family by the Financial Aid Office. Email SCloans@swarthmore.edu with questions.
  • “Authorized Financial Aid” is aid that has already been subtracted from your Swarthmore College charges.
Outside Scholarships

You may deduct outside scholarship funds not already applied to your student account that you are certain to receive for the fall or spring semester. If you have not already reported your outside scholarship amounts, you must report them to the Financial Aid Office. Email finaid@swarthmore.edu with the name, source agency and include the new or updated amounts. Please see our Financial Aid Handbook on our Common Questions website for more information.

  • All scholarship checks should be mailed to the Student Accounts Office.
    • Please do not send, or have sent, checks form your outside scholarship provider to the Financial Aid Office.
  • Use the following address for all checks and outside scholarship notifications:
    • Swarthmore College
      Student Accounts Office
      500 College Avenue
      Swarthmore, PA 19081
Borrowing loans for your semester bill from the College
  • Students and parents may borrow through the Federal Direct Loan or Federal Parent (PLUS) Loan programs, even if they have not yet applied. More information about these federal educational loans is available on-line by visiting our Swarthmore College Financing Options website or www.studentaid.gov.
  • Questions about the Federal Direct Loan or the Federal Parent (PLUS) Loan application process not answered on our website can be directed to: scloans@swarthmore.edu.
FAFSA Delay - Federal Loans and State Grants
  • Federal Loans
    • Due to the continued difficulties and processing delays with the federal aid process beyond the College’s control, some loans will not be able to be processed by the bill due date and even into late August. If you do not see your Federal Direct Loan deducted from your fall bill this may be the reason.
    • If you requested a federal direct loan on your CSS/Profile or via our web questionnaire, you may deduct one-half of the amount that you requested (net a federal origination fee of 1.057%) from your fall bill.
    • Please rest assured that the Student Accounts Office is aware of your loan request and won’t charge a late fee on any outstanding balance to be covered by the loan. The Student Accounts Office will also be notified of any family who applied for a Federal Direct PLUS or private loan.
  • Pennsylvania State Grants
    • At this time, we do not have a recipient list from the state, however, we will notify students who qualify for this grant once this information is received.

    • Should you be a recipient of these funds they will not be in addition to any financial aid that you have already received as outlined in your financial aid decision letter from Swarthmore College. These funds will replace Swarthmore Scholarship dollar for dollar.

    • If you are a PA resident and not a recipient of these funds, you will not lose any financial aid that you have already received outlined in your financial aid decision.

Health Insurance
  • All students must be covered by health insurance. Those not covered through their family’s plan must be covered through the College’s health insurance program.

  • The Health Center will contact students regarding the Student Health Insurance Plan for the upcoming academic year.

    • All students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

    • You may waive out of the plan if you meet the requirements. Please see the Health Center website or the email sent to your student earlier in the summer for the deadline.

    • If you have other health insurance, update your insurance information on mySwarthmore using the tab on your E-Bill. Questions? Contact Gallagher Student Health & Special Risk at (833) 255-0743 Or Gallagher help center

  • More about the health insurance requirement and the “opt out” process can be found on Swarthmore’s Health Center website.

  • If you enrolled in the College’s health insurance program, it is noted as a separate charge on your bill. The annual insurance charge must be paid in full with your fall semester bill.

  • Discounts will be automatically applied based on your eligibility once you have enrolled.
