THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE

by Bertolt Brecht

Translated by Eric Bentley

Swarthmore's Department of Theater presents Bertolt Brecht's THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE. Considered one of the great works of the 20th century, this classic of western political theater asks -- what drives our ideas of right and wrong in desperate times. Set against a backdrop of chaos and civil war, this epic parable tells the tale of a young servant who rescues the abandoned baby of a deposed governor and raises him as her own. Weaving together raucous performances, humor, music, and high theatricality, THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE tells the tale of competing claims of rights and privileges, of blood and love, and entertains, for a moment, the possibility that we have the power to define what true justice is.
