Janice Hudgings ’91, as Pomona College’s new vice president for academic affairs and dean, will coordinate
and support academic programs, teaching, and research. Hudgings was the associate dean of faculty at Mount Holyoke College and director of the college’s Science Center before joining Pomona. She began at Mount Holyoke in 1999 as an assistant professor of physics.
Hudgings’ research focuses on optics and semiconductor devices, including solar cells, energy-efficient lighting, and lasers. She has published more than 30 articles in scholarly journals, many of which are co-authored with students. She has garnered awards and recognition for her skills as a teacher and as a scientist.
Her research has led to three U.S. patents and, in 2007, she co-founded the company Alenas Imaging Inc. to commercialize thermal-imaging technology developed in her lab. As a Rhodes scholar, Hudgings studied maths and philosophy at Oxford University before receiving an M.Sc. in mathematics. She holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California–Berkeley.
