Michael Fields ’69
Michael Fields ’69 received the 2012 Ida B. Wells award from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). As news director for WABE 90.1 FM, Fields has focused on diverse and underserved populations to more accurately reflect the communities that public broadcasting serves in Atlanta. Fields focuses on coverage of such issues as Georgia’s immigration reform, the test-cheating scandal in Atlanta public schools, and the increase in child sex trafficking. The diversity of the WABE newsroom staff also contributed to the Fields’ qualification for this award, making it a priority to reflect the region’s minority populations when hiring. He says he “is greatly humbled to even be mentioned in the same breath with such a courageous journalist as Ida B. Wells.” Besides the NABJ award, he also recently was named one of Atlanta’s 10 Most Influential Men by Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine.
