Kathy Stevens ’89
Kathy Stevens ’89, of Silver Spring, Md., was appointed in May as executive director of the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL), a nonprofit organization that supports literacy to promote healthy communities. Based in Rockville, Md. and incorporated in 2006 with the support of county leaders, MCAEL works with 60 literacy-service providers that offer instruction at low cost or free to the more than 132,000 limited-English proficient and native-English-speaking residents in the county.
“Kathy Stevens is a well-known community leader. She’ll be an excellent ambassador of the message that literacy is the crux of our county’s future success,” said Aryani Ong, immediate past board president. Stevens has devoted her career and volunteer work to higher education and nonprofits and most recently worked at Montgomery College as annual fund director. She has also worked as a senior executive at an international, nonprofit membership organization and as an employment lawyer. Stevens chairs the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board and serves on the boards of Montgomery Women and Impact Silver Spring. She also is a graduate of Leadership Montgomery and Impact Silver Spring’s Community and Empowerment Program.
