During Alumni Weekend, the Alumni Council presented the first Eugene M. Lang ’38 Impact awards. Created in 2010, the first, then called the Alumni Council Impact Award, was given to Lang, and then renamed in his honor. Recipients of the 2012 Lang Impact awards were Peter Schickele ’57 and Heidi Hartmann ’67.

Schickele is a well-known composer, musicologist, and satirist, recognized for his own compositions and for discovering and performing the works of P.D.Q. Bach, the “youngest and oddest” child (created by Schickele) of J.S. Bach. Hartmann is founder and president of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research and is an expert on women and the economy, workforce participation, employment, pay equity, and social security.

The Eugene M. Lang ’38 Impact Award is an addition to the two other alumni awards given at Alumni Weekend: the Joseph B. Shane ’25 Alumni Service Award, recognizing distinguished service to the College; and the Arabella Carter Community Service Award, recognizing distinguished service to one’s community.
