Rose Olver ’58, professor emerita of psychology and women’s and gender studies at Amherst College,
recently had her portrait unveiled in Amherst’s Johnson Chapel, which the college considers a high honor. Olver is the first woman and the first faculty member whose portrait will hang in the chapel beside many of Amherst’s former presidents, chairmen of trustees, and noted alumni such as President Calvin Coolidge. Olver was Amherst’s first tenure-track female faculty member and began teaching more than a decade before the college became coeducational. Her portrait, by artist Sarah Belchetz-Swenson, will be positioned prominently beside the chapel’s stage to symbolize her important faculty role in the institution’s history.
For more than 50 years, Olver helped hire female colleagues, fought for coeducation, and chaired the committees that created Amherst’s women’s and gender studies department. She served on the executive committee of the faculty and on two presidential search committees and was faculty marshal for nearly 15 years.
