NCAA qualifier Anne Miller ’10 finishes an illustrious career in Garnet swimming.

Women’s Swimming
(5th, Centennial Conference)
Anne Miller ’10 completed one of the most illustrious careers in Swarthmore women’s swimming history with a two-medal performance at the Centennial Conference Championships. Miller—who went undefeated in dual meets in the 2010 calendar year—won the 200 butterfly with an NCAA Division III A-cut time of 2:04.14, guaranteeing her a spot in the NCAA Championships in March. She also won silver in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA B-cut time of 57.40. With Miller leading the way, the Garnet women swept the 200 butterfly at the Centennial championships, with Casey Osborn ’10 (2:11.11) and Hannah Gotwals ’13 (2:12.35) earning silver and bronze respectively. As a team, Swat finished in fifth place in the Conference meet and was 2-5 in Centennial Conference dual meets.

Men’s Swimming
(2nd, Centennial Conference)
Another strong showing for the Garnet men at the Centennial Conference Championships garnered second place for the fourth consecutive year. Seven Swarthmore swimmers earned medals at the Conference meet. Sterling Satterfield ’11 and Jacob Benveniste ’13 led the way with two individual medals apiece. Satterfield won silver in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.76)—finishing just six-tenths of a second off of an NCAA B-cut time—and bronze in the 100 breaststroke (59.88). Benveniste took silver in the 1,650 freestyle (16:21.25) and bronze in the 500 freestyle (4:44.56). His time in the 1,650 was good for two school records—his overall time set the school mark, and his split time at the 1,000-yard mark (9:56.30) broke the school 1,000-free record. Also capturing individual medals for the Garnet were Tyler Hanson ’13, who earned silver in the 400-yard IM (4:15.48), Sam Bullard-Sisken ’12, who took bronze in the 100-yard backstroke (53.49), and Charles Hepper ’13, who took bronze in the 400-yard IM (4:16.87). The Garnet 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Roger Chin ’13, Bullard-Sisken, Satterfield, and Tim Brevart ’12, rounded out the Garnet medalists with a third-place finish (1:37.97).

Travis Pollen ’12 also made a splash at the Centennial meet, breaking the six-year-old paralympic American record for his age category in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.80. Pollen, an above-knee amputee, will compete at the U.S Paralympics Swimming National Championships in San Antonio in March. Other highlights for the Garnet men included a first-place finish at the inaugural Swarthmore Invitational and a 5-1 record in dual Centennial Conference meets.

Basketball player Will Gates ’13 earned All-Centennial honors.

Men’s Basketball (7-18, 6-12 CC)
The men’s basketball team made strides in 2009–2010, more than doubling the previous season’s win total while playing spoiler to the rest of the Centennial Conference, upsetting playoff-bound teams Ursinus and Gettysburg in Tarble Pavilion. With freshmen leading the team in nearly every statistical category throughout the season, the future looks bright for the Garnet. Will Gates ’13 completed one of the best first-year campaigns in program history, finishing third in the conference in scoring and fifth in rebounding, and earning All-Centennial honors. Gates’s 16.1 points-per-game ranks as the second-best scoring average for a freshman in Centennial Conference history. Captain Matt Allen ’10 finished his career ranked sixth in career three-pointers (138) and eighth in career assists (217).

Women’s Basketball
(12-13, 9-11)
Kathryn Stockbower ’11 had another record-setting season, earning first-team All-Conference honors for the third consecutive season. She led the Conference in rebounding (13.5 rpg) and finished second in scoring (17.7 ppg). The preseason All-American also recorded 22 double-doubles for the season, scoring in double-figures in all 25 of the Garnet’s games and grabbing 10 or more rebounds in all but three of those games. The junior also became the second player in Swarthmore history to register 1,000 career points and rebounds, finishing the season ranked fifth in all-time points (1,307) and second in all-time rebounds (1,013). Stockbower’s accomplishments were just as impressive off the court, as she became just the 11th student-athlete in Swarthmore history to be named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America women’s basketball team.

The team narrowly missed the Centennial Conference playoffs for the second consecutive season but still provided fans with plenty of excitement. In January, the Garnet captured first place at the Catholic University Women’s Basketball Classic, defeating the host Cardinals 65–57 in the title game. Swat also displayed a flair for the dramatic, with 12 of its 25 games decided by five points or fewer and two games (against playoff-teams McDaniel and Dickinson) won at the buzzer.

Men’s Indoor Track
(8th Centennial Conference)
Daniel Ly ’12 led the Garnet men at the Centennial Conference championship meet, taking fourth place in the triple jump with a season-best of 43’7.75”, narrowly missing a top-three finish. Also at the Centennial meet, Brian King ’13 took 10th in the men’s 800 meter with a season-best time of 2:00.97. At the Valentine Invitational at Boston University, Ly took eighth place in triple jump (43’5.25”) among Division I competitors, and John McMinn ’13 ran a season-best time of 9:00.82 in the men’s 3,000 meter run.

Twice-gold Kenyetta Givens ’12 broke her own record in the 55-meter hurdles.

Women’s Indoor Track
(7th Centennial Conference)
Kenyetta Givans ’12 earned two gold medals at the Centennial Conference championship meet, taking first place in the women’s 55m hurdles (8.44) and women’s 55 meter dash (7.47)—breaking her own school record and earning an NCAA provisional time in the 55m hurdles. She led the Garnet to a seventh-place finish. The women’s 4×800 relay team—consisting of Lauren DeLuca ’10, Mariel Feigen ’10, Margret Lenfest ’12, and Rebecca Hammond ’13—also medaled and made history, running a school-record time of 9:41.47 to earn second place at the meet. In the shotput, Ogechi Irondi ’12 earned a top-five finish at Centennials with a personal-best throw of 34’ 0.25”, which places her sixth on the College’s all-time list.

Badminton player Kim Kramer ’12 remains undefeated in-season in her Garnet career.

Badminton (6-1)
Kim Kramer ’12 completed one of the most decorated careers in Swarthmore badminton history, finishing the 2009–2010 season—as well as her entire Garnet career—undefeated in singles and doubles action on her way to earning a No. 15 national ranking. The performance of Maithili Parikh ’11—Kramer’s doubles partner—wasn’t too far behind, as she also finished the season unbeaten in singles and doubles play. Kramer and Parikh teamed up to capture doubles championships at the Main Line Invitational and Mid-Atlantic Classic.
