Ben Sirman ’62
Ben Sirman ’62 was recognized on Jan. 25 by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association with the Herm Reitzes Award for service to sports. Sirman, who attended Swarthmore on a McCabe Scholarship spent his career as an educator, guidance counselor, coach, administrator, and athletics director. His work was marked by his influential tenures at Bridgeville and Seaford High Schools totaling 33 years; 20 years of service to the state boys basketball tournament committee; and his continuing contributions to the Henlopen Conference. A fellow coach at Seaford High School says of Sirman, “He has unbelievable patience when teaching, and the kids just flock to him, respond to him so well, and respect him so much.” Although retired, Sirman remains active as a member of the board of directors for the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame and as an officer of the Nanticoke Senior Center in Seaford.

Coach SIRMAN, was my HS Coach (football) at Seaford HS. He was and is a truly amazing man, leader, mentor and example.
I played for him 35 years and 17 knee surgeries ago. I clung to every word he said, as I planned on getting my college degree and coaching football and teaching myself, and I wanted to gain as much knowledge as possible from him and emulate his style of coaching and leading young men.
He helped motivate me to keep my grades up so I could attend college and thru his guidance I was able to do so, but I blew my knee out in spring ball of my freshman year. And my main goal was to Coach and when that goal was no longer realistic due to my severe knee injury, I dropped out of the University.
I am still in touch with The COACH, via email, and he still inspires me and gives me encouragement., I am very greatful and blessed for having played for and remaind friends with one of my heros.
