Spotlight On … Romane Paul ’10

Romane Paul ’10, a political science and education special major at Swarthmore who gave the senior speech at the 2010 Commencement, recently addressed another graduation audience—as Columbia Law School’s J.D. class speaker.

What does this honor mean to you?

I am incredibly honored to have attended Columbia Law School. I am excited about joining a group of fellow alums who have gone on to change our world. Becoming a lawyer is a tremendous responsibility especially during these times. It is my hope that I can continue working on behalf of the causes I care strongly about. 

What are you up to now?

I am enjoying my time off now that I have taken the New York State Bar. In October, I will start as an associate at a law firm in New York City. 

How has Swarthmore shaped your career—and your life?

Swarthmore has played a major role in introducing me to my life's purpose. At Swarthmore, I was involved in tutoring students from Chester High School, worked on two presidential campaigns, sang at the Trinity Episcopal Church, and formed lifelong friendships. Today, I am still involved with these sorts of things in a new context.

What advice would you give current Swarthmoreans hoping to follow in your path?

Remember that there is a part of the world awaiting your discovery and your creative touch. Trust your journey.
