1923 Sigma Xi Chapter

A chapter of the prestigious scientific honor society is established at the College. At a dinner hosted by President Frank Aydelotte to mark the occasion, the national Sigma Xi president Henry Ward noted the "unusual interest" the new chapter had attracted, given the "distinct departure" from their policy to establish a chapter at an undergraduate institution.

Then-Pennsylvania Governor William Sproul, Class of 1891, H'1919, also attended the dinner and served as toastmaster, along with math and astronomy professor John A. Miller, inaugural president of the Swarthmore chapter — then the organization's smallest. Today, the Swarthmore's Sigma Xi chapter hosts annual talks with scholars and poster sessions during which students share their research experiences and findings with the broader College community.
