Globalization, Environment & Society: Study Abroad in South Africa
About the Program
A junior year study-abroad program, the Macalester-Pomona-Swarthmore Consortium Program offers its students a unique opportunity for focused study on the theme of "Globalization, Environment & Society." The program has been designed by the environmental studies faculty of these three liberal arts colleges in consultation with the University of Cape Town. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.
Students from the three Consortium schools, as well as those schools under cross-registration agreements with the three schools, may apply for the January-June semester.

For undergraduate courses (i.e. those with prefixes in the 3000 range), only courses with the 'F' suffix must be chosen (this means first semester). Other suffixes e.g. S, W or H mean that the course is NOT suitable. For most postgraduate courses (4000-level) the semester is not specified (X and Z is the commonest suffix and it does not relate to semester offered) and it is usually not finalized, until the academic year in question, in which particular semester the module is actually offered. For the two compulsory 4000-level modules (i.e. Globalization and the research project) it is of course the first semester. Students accepted to the program should make their motivations on a curriculum that is structured as follows:
- EGS 4034F Globalization, Environment & Society (can count as a Social Sciences distribution credit at Swarthmore, as well as ENVS)
- EGS 4030F Research Project in Environmental & Geographical Science (can count toward a departmental major at Swarthmore, as well as ENVS)
- XXX 3000F Option 1 (can count toward a departmental major at Swarthmore, as well as ENVS; see Prof. Everbach)
- XXX 3000F Option 2 (can count toward a departmental major at Swarthmore, as well as ENVS; see Prof. Everbach)
