A trio of Swarthmore College student-athletes recently capped off their spring seasons with outstanding individual performances at the national level.
Adria Retter '23 won a gold medal in discus at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, while the team of Michael Melnikov ’26 and Utham Koduri ’26 finished second in the doubles draw at the Division III Individual Championships.
Retter, a Quakertown, Pa. native who recently graduated with a double major in mathematics and computer science, entered the championship meet as the national leader by nearly three meters and saved her best for last, recording a personal, program, and conference record of 51.46m on her sixth and final throw of the day. With the win, she earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season after finishing third last spring.
Retter became the second individual event winner in program history and the first Swarthmore thrower to win a national title. Katie Jo McMenamin '16 was previously the program's lone national champion after capturing the 1500-meter crown in 2016.

Koduri (left) and Melnikov finish the year with an impressive 13-3 record in doubles.
In the championship tennis match, Melnikov, from Karlsruhe, Germany, and Koduri, a native of Plano, Texas, pushed the top-seeded team from Case Western Reserve University to the brink and nearly pulled off the upset, but ultimately fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-7(5). The freshman duo, which earned All-America status after winning its first match, reached the finals after capturing three-set victories in both the quarter- and semifinals.
Melnikov and Koduri finish the year with an impressive 13-3 record in doubles and will look to build upon their individual and team success in the fall.
