“Sustaining Swarthmore’s excellence depends on a continuous process of taking stock of the present and envisioning the future,” said President Alfred H. Bloom in a recent interview. “Fortunately, we have a remarkable community of students, faculty, staff, board members, and alumni who are able, through careful and imaginative dialogue, to do that analytic work and to position the College to deliver powerfully on its distinctive educational mission in response to their best projection of that future world.”
Last year, a College Planning Steering Committee and eight topical planning committees began the task of defining directions for the College over the decade ahead. The committees, consisting of faculty, staff, students, board and alumni representation, met throughout this past academic year and will be forwarding their recommendations to the Steering Committee and sharing them with the larger community. This fall, the Steering Committee, assisted by input from the on-campus and larger community, will draw on those recommendations in shaping a set of priorities for the College’s future.
By the end of the 2009–2010 academic year, the current financial aid initiative will be completed and the College should be positioned to embark on the silent phase of a next comprehensive campaign, designed to meet the priorities defined and, thereby, sustain the College’s distinctive strengths.
