Alumni College Abroad: Amazon Expedition

Iquitos.jpgJoin Associate Professor of Biology Jose-Luis Machado, alumni, and friends for an Amazon River Expedition from Oct. 7–16, 2011.

The 10-day adventure includes a six-night cruise from Iquitos, Peru, up the Amazon, Maranon, and Pucate rivers. Highlights of our journey include an optional maloka jungle camp stay in the Amazon Natural Park; visits to Amazon villages; and the opportunity to see rare birds, monkeys, sloths, and pink river dolphins. Explore Lima’s historic colonial district, take nature walks through virgin rainforests, picnic among giant water lilies, and meet a Jibaro Shaman to learn about traditional spiritual rites and ancient tribal medicine.

Enjoy classic 19th-century riverboat elegance and 21st-century comfort. Our vessel features specially designed observation decks and is equipped with a fleet of excursion boats for shore visits in the most remote reaches of the upper Amazon. Throughout the program, highly trained, English-speaking naturalists provide expert insight into the Amazon’s amazing array of flora and fauna as well as the cultures of the Amazon’s numerous indigenous peoples.

Capacity is limited on this unique adventure. Please contact the Alumni College Abroad office at (800) 789-9738 or via e-mail at alumni_travel@swarthmore.edu for more details.
