William Ehrhart ’73
William Ehrhart ’73, a former Marine and award-winning poet and memoirist whose work has been strongly influenced by his 13-month tour of duty during the Vietnam War, recently received the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Excellence in the Arts Award. VVA President John Rowan first came across Ehrhart’s work in the 1972 anthology Winning Hearts and Minds. “Since then,” says Rowan, “he has edited two exceptional volumes of Vietnam veteran poetry, has produced three first-rate memoirs, and continues to write, much of which is derived from his experiences fighting in Vietnam.” Last summer, Ehrhart was the featured poet in River Poets Quarterly. His most recent books include Sleeping with the Dead; The Madness of It All: Essays on War, Literature, and American Life; and Beautiful Wreckage: New & Selected Poems. Since 2002, he has taught English and history at the Haverford School.
