On June 1, the 364 members of Swarthmore’s senior class officially became alumni. On Sept. 6, the second annual worldwide Welcome to the City! event was held to help these graduates acclimate to their post-Swarthmore homes.

Alumni volunteers are a vital part of the Admissions Office’s outreach, recruitment, and yield efforts. They interview prospective students, represent Swarthmore at college fairs, and serve as resources for both prospective and admitted students and their families. During orientation for the Class of 2012, Alumni Office staff welcomed the incoming class with its annual “mugging” event. First-year students stopped by the event in front of Parrish Hall to collect mugs, enjoy a variety of cooling ice cream, and sign up to work in the Alumni Office.

Marilee Roberg ’73, a self-employed attorney and arbitrator, received this year’s Joseph Shane Award in recognition of her service to the College community. An admissions interviewer since her undergraduate days, Roberg is a longtime member of Alumni Council, head of the Chicago Connections group, and founder of the Chicago book club.

COURSES FOR FALL ’08
Consider taking a Lifelong Learning course this fall. Courses are taught seminar style by Swarthmore faculty, but without grades or credit—just learning for learning’s sake. At its April 2008 meeting, the Alumni Council ratified a proposal to change the procedure for selecting new Council members. Currently, two new members are elected in each of seven geographic zones. The Nominating Committee of the Council selects four candidates to run for two positions in each zone, and alumni vote for two candidates.
