Design E

In the following computer-generated architectural renderings, trees have been removed to aid clarity. Pattern of paths is suggestive only (not a required part of design).

Perspective view:

Looking West from Hicks parking lot:

Description: The "Three Courtyards" scheme proposes new construction in smaller, "discrete" campus components around the present location of Dupont Hall. These building additions are linked to Dupont Hall at basement, first, and second floor levels. The additions provide space for new Wet Labs, classrooms, and Mechanical Systems.

DuPont is partially demolished and completely renovated, and a new large (200 seat) lecture hall is constructed adjacent to Cornell Science Library and the Physics wing of DuPont Hall. The roof of the lecture hall will form a new open plaza with views toward the Crum Woods.

A new Central Chilled Water Plant is constructed in the shell of the former Dupont Research Annex (or possibly as a free-standing building near the base of the water tower).

A new addition in front of Cornell and Dupont Physics, linked to Martin Hall with a glass-enclosed connector on the second floor and a covered walkway on the first floor, provides space for Biology and other shared functions. A new basement level courtyard opens much of the basement level to daylight.

Martin Hall has a new Mechanical Penthouse constructed, with infrastructure upgrades and selective renovation of areas adjacent to the central core of the building, as well as corridors and the Main Entrance.

Advantages: New construction enhances North Campus entry; courtyards increase indoor/outdoor connections; new construction massing dispersed into "smaller" buildings.

Disadvantages: weak edge to North Quad; requires realignment of Dupont Lot access drive; increases site coverage/reduces North Quad area.
