Students in introductory language classes are often asked to produce video projects that showcase their new skills. This spring, Jonathan Stafstrom '10, a film and media studies special major from Madison, Wis., demonstrated his newly learned Chinese in a film he not only wrote, directed, and edited, but also in which he played all the parts. "When you look to see whether a language is stable or not, you have to look to see whether the youngest people in the community are speaking the language," says Associate Professor of Linguistics Ted Fernald, who organizes the NLA's annual summer institute. "There are some children who speak the Navajo language, and that's an encouraging sign. But the vast majority of children in the Navajo Nation don't speak Navajo very well, if at all."

This spring, one group filmed a parody of some of the most oft-quoted scenes from Forrest Gump. The players included Hitesh Bhattarai '08 as Forrest, Elena Chopyak '08 as Jenny, as well as Aaron Sweeney '10 and Malcolm Thomas '10. (with subtitles)

Voices that Matter One winter morning last year, Hansi Lo Wang '09 was conducting a phone interview in Lodge 6, just behind Bond Hall, when he heard something on the other end of the line that shocked him: the tattoo of gunfire, frighteningly close.
